Gary Glennon 2021  Kentucky Derby Picks

I really like Essential Quality but also think Rock Your World and Highly Motivated have a big-time chance

to win. I will use the three of those in the Derby as a $1 ticket with all in Oaks.

Morning-line favorite Essential Quality has never lost in five career starts, was the Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner and 2-year-old champion last year and was impressive in winning the Blue Grass Stakes earlier this month on the Derby trail.
The Brad Cox-trained son of Tapit has trained well at Churchill Downs - his home base - in the weeks leading up to the Derby and is my pick. While I believe he will run big and win the races, there are five other horses that I believe could be wearing the roses on Saturday night. The speed was spread throughout during the post position draw for the field, while Florida Derby winner Known Agenda got the worst of the draws. He's in the No. 1 post position, which hasn't produced a Derby winner since Ferdinand in 1986. Another serious contender - Blue Grass runner-up Highly Motivated - is in the No. 17 post position, which

is 0-for-41 all-time in Derby races. The Derby is the best betting race of the year! Good luck and enjoy.

-1. Essential Quality (2-1) - The Breeders' Cup Juvenile champion is still undefeated after a gutsy win over Highly Motivated in the Blue Grass Stakes. He looks the part and I believe will run like a a freight train Saturday

-2. Rock Your World (5-1) - The most impressive prep race of the season came in the Santa Anita Derby. The son of Candy Ride was making his debut on dirt and looked sensational in winning at Santa Anita for trainer John Sadler. Could he be a super horse?.

-6. Hot Rod Charlie (8-1) - The son of Oxbow seems to get better each time he steps on the track and trainer Doug O'Neill knows how to win a Derby.

-7. King Fury (20-1) - Is best bet of the long shots, I think he could be simply because he will be flying in the end.

-8. O Besos (20-1) - Local trainer Greg Foley wants him to drop back and make one run in the end; young jockey Marcelino Pedroza will be making his first Derby start and that scares me away from him a bit.

-9. Midnight Bourbon (20-1) - A second-place finished in the Louisiana Derby got him into the race; he got loose on the backside a couple of weeks ago and that might be the most fun the colt has in his Derby experience.

-10. Sainthood (50-1) - Ran second in the Jeff Ruby Stakes to get the points; could be a monster price and has a chance to get a small piece of the purse.

-11. Medina Spirit (15-1) - Trainer Bob Baffert had a loaded stable during the winter, but Life is Good was injured and Concert Tour was removed from Derby consideration. Baffert said Medina Spirit is one of the "top 10 horses" in the race, which is not a ringing endorsement.

-12. Super Stock (30-1) - Super Stock was super impressive in winning the Arkansas Derby; seems to keep improving.

-13. Bourbonic (30-1) - The long shot winner of the Wood Memorial has a great style for the Kentucky Derby; he will try to win it coming from the clouds but not sure he's good enough against a field this solid and this large.

-14. Soup and Sandwich (30-1) - Trainer Mark Casse is high on the son of Mischief; he's lightly raced but was second in the Florida Derby.

-15. Helium (50-1) - The Tampa Bay Derby winner hasn't raced in eight weeks; I don't like the long layoff.

-16. Like the King (50-1) - The son of Palace Malice has a spot in the Derby field by winning the Jeff Ruby Stakes, but I don't like him against this field.

-17. Dynamic One (20-1) - Second in the Wood Memorial was a solid showing, but was run down by a

72-1 shot.

-18. Keepmeinmind (50-1) - Was high on my list at the end of the last year; but has been fifth and sixth in two starts this year.

-19. Hidden Stash (50-1) - The son of Constitution is 0-for-3 this year and was fourth in the Blue Grass Stakes; does have a win at Churchill but just don't think he can match these.

-20. Brooklyn Strong (50-1) - Wasn't in the Derby field until the Sunday and shouldn't be a factor at all.
